How Would You Describe the Year 2024 to Your Grandchildren?

【Model Essay 1】

The year 2024 was an unforgettable year, full of important events that shaped the world and left lasting lessons. If I were to describe it to my grandchildren, I would focus on three major stories: the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, the triumphs of the Paris Olympics, and the continued global struggle against climate change.

First, 2024 was a year when artificial intelligence reached new heights. AI became a part of everyday life for millions, transforming how we work, study, and even entertain ourselves. From AI-driven personalized education to cutting-edge medical diagnostics, its positive impact was undeniable. However, this technological revolution also raised serious concerns about privacy, ethics, and the future of jobs. Governments worldwide scrambled to create laws to regulate AI responsibly, while the public debated its benefits and risks. Living through this era, I felt both excitement for the future and a sense of responsibility to use this powerful tool wisely.

Second, the Paris Olympics stood out as a beacon of unity and inspiration. Athletes from around the globe came together to celebrate the human spirit through competition and sportsmanship. This year’s games were particularly memorable because they introduced new sports like breakdancing, which brought fresh energy to the traditional Olympic program. One moment that deeply moved me was seeing competitors from rival nations embrace after a hard-fought match. It reminded us all that sports can bridge even the widest divides. Watching the events was not just entertaining but also a reminder of the resilience and determination humans are capable of.

Finally, 2024 was marked by the ongoing battle against climate change. Around the world, countries intensified their efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition to renewable energy. Scientists achieved breakthroughs in creating more efficient solar panels and batteries, while young activists continued to pressure leaders to act urgently. Despite these strides, devastating natural disasters highlighted the urgent need for global cooperation. It was a year that taught us that caring for our planet is a shared responsibility—one that requires action from every individual and nation.

In conclusion, 2024 was a year of progress and reflection, filled with challenges that called for innovation, resilience, and unity. If I could share one lesson with my grandchildren, it would be this: The events of 2024 showed us the importance of working together to create a better future. Whether through technology, sports, or environmental stewardship, humanity proved its capacity for growth and collaboration.

【Model Essay 2】

In approaching this topic, I would like to write an essay in the form of a letter to be written to my grandchildren sixty years from now.

Dear Grandchildren,

Today, I want to share with you the memories of the year 2024 through this letter. That year was a pivotal moment in my life, and three significant events made it truly unforgettable.

First, let me tell you about June 2024. During that month, I graduated from Grade 6 in California, USA, and was honored with the "Excellence in Effort" award. When I moved to the United States in the third grade, I couldn’t speak a word of English. I worked hard every day and managed to graduate from ESL classes within a year. I even joined advanced math classes and excelled as a leader in a volunteer program, earning recognition for my contributions. Life in the U.S. wasn’t always easy, but it was filled with valuable lessons and growth. Through this experience, I developed not only my English skills but also my communication abilities, leadership qualities, and proactive mindset. I hope that you, too, will have the opportunity to experience life abroad and gain as much as I did.

Next came July 2024, when I returned to Japan and began preparing in earnest for my junior high school entrance exams. I set my sights on Shibu-Maku Junior High School and worked tirelessly toward that goal. While I was already confident in English communication thanks to my time in the U.S., I realized the importance of improving my grammar, expression, and overall breadth of knowledge. Surprisingly, my English skills continued to grow even after returning to Japan, and I felt fulfilled in my studies. Preparing for the entrance exams was not just about hard work and challenges—it was a journey of personal growth. I hope that if you ever decide to take on such a challenge, you will find it to be a rewarding experience.

Lastly, 2024 was the year I set my dream of becoming a United Nations official. That year, the world was grappling with the ongoing war in Ukraine and internal conflicts in Israel, with no clear resolution in sight. Beyond these crises, countless refugees were suffering due to political instability and natural disasters worldwide. Watching these events unfold on the news with my parents, I learned about the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its incredible work in aiding displaced people. I realized that my experiences, personality, and desire to contribute to the world aligned perfectly with the goals of this organization. From that moment, I decided to pursue a career with UNHCR. Years later, after graduating from university, I achieved that dream and began working for the United Nations, a goal that took root in my heart during 2024.

The year 2024 laid the foundation for my life and became an unforgettable chapter in my story. My dear grandchildren, no matter how tough things may get, I encourage you to dream big and chase those dreams relentlessly. Embrace challenges and seek out diverse experiences to enrich your life.

With love,

Grandpa

Imagine a stone, a flame, or a river. Which of these best represents your personality? Explain why.

When considering whether a stone, a flame, or a river best represents my personality, I find that a flame captures the essence of who I am. A flame is dynamic, full of energy, and capable of growing stronger with the right fuel. Three key aspects of my personality—my passion, focus, and value for friendships—are well reflected in the characteristics of a flame.

First and foremost, I am a passionate person. Growing up in the United States, I was initially a shy and reserved child. However, my friends and the environment around me encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace opportunities with enthusiasm. This transformation became evident when I actively participated in school programs and summer camps. Whether it was leading a group project or organizing activities at camp, I found myself driven by a newfound energy to make meaningful contributions. This passion has stayed with me, motivating me to approach new challenges with confidence and excitement.

Second, like a flame that grows larger when it finds the right conditions, I possess a strong ability to focus and dedicate myself fully to my goals. When I returned to Japan in the summer of sixth grade, I began preparing for entrance exams—a challenge that demanded an intense level of concentration. To my surprise, I discovered a previously untapped level of focus within myself. I immersed myself in my studies, overcoming the hurdles of adapting to a new academic system while maintaining my determination. This experience not only helped me achieve my immediate goals but also gave me the confidence to face future challenges with the same intensity and dedication.

Finally, I value and nurture my friendships, much like a flame that requires consistent care to keep burning brightly. One of my closest friends, Paulo, is someone I met during my time in the United States. Despite being from different cultural backgrounds—he is from Mexico, and I am from Japan—we formed a deep bond through mutual understanding and shared dreams. Even after I returned to Japan, Paulo and I promised to support each other in pursuing our shared goal of working for the United Nations. This connection exemplifies my belief in the importance of maintaining meaningful relationships and supporting those I care about.

In conclusion, a flame best represents my personality because it symbolizes passion, focus, and the warmth of human connection. Just as a flame grows and thrives when nurtured, I too continue to develop as a person through my dedication to my goals and my relationships with others. I am confident that the qualities of a flame will guide me as I pursue my aspirations and contribute to the world around me.
