帰国生/インター生【慶應SFC中】2019英語・モデルエッセイ

The two students were waiting nervously outside the headmaster's office. Emma and Liam exchanged worried glances, holding the broken branch that symbolized their mistake. Earlier that afternoon, they had been testing a homemade pulley system under the old oak tree, but the rope slipped, and the branch snapped under the strain. They were sure they’d be severely punished.

When they entered, Mr. Dawson’s serious expression made their hearts sink. “I’ve heard about your experiment,” he began, surprising them. “Your science teacher told me you’re working on an innovative project.” Emma stammered, “W-we didn’t mean to damage the tree. It was an accident.” Liam added, “We’ll do whatever it takes to fix it.”

Mr. Dawson leaned forward, his voice softening. “Science often involves failure,” he said. “But it’s through those failures that we learn and improve. However, real progress requires responsibility. Imagine if your experiment had hurt someone, or caused more damage.” The students nodded, humbled. “We’ll be more careful next time,” Liam promised. Mr. Dawson smiled. “Good. I believe your project has potential. Take this as a lesson—not just for science, but for life. With thoughtfulness, your work could one day bring happiness to others.”

That evening, as they repaired the branch with the groundskeeper and reflected on the headmaster’s words, they felt a newfound determination. They had never felt as happy as they did that evening.
