Hi, I’m Max, a golden retriever. I’ve always been Lily’s best friend, her shadow, her partner in all things. From the moment she picked me out at the shelter, I’ve been hers. She’s my whole world, and I am the happiest pet dog on Earth.
However, something started when Jason entered the picture. He’s Lily’s new “human” boyfriend, and I don’t like how much time he spends with her. They laugh together, share long walks, and sometimes, he even throws the ball for me—but it’s not the same. I want Lily’s attention, her smiles, the way she used to look at me like I was all she needed.
This evening, I watched them from across the room, feeling a pang of jealousy as Jason made Lily laugh. My tail drooped as I lay in the corner, wondering if I was being replaced. Then, Jason surprised me. He came over, knelt beside me, and scratched behind my ears. “You’re important to Lily too, Max,” he said softly. Lily smiled, her eyes warm as she reached out to stroke my fur.
In that moment, I understood. I’m not being replaced—I have a role that no one else can fill. I’m not her boyfriend; I’m her companion, her unwavering support, her best friend. Now, I greet Jason with a wagging tail and do my best to welcome him. After all, if Lily is happy, that’s all that matters. And no matter what, I’ll always be her Max.
